Viewing Windows Over Time, Windows 1.0 to Windows 11

 


After 6 years since the arrival of Windows 10, Microsoft finally introduced its newest operating system (OS), Windows 11. One of the most significant features of the OS is the fresh and clean interface (UI) design. With the inauguration of Windows 11, this indicates that there have been 15 types of Windows OS made by Mircosoft since it was released 29 years ago. Then what kind of transformation of Windows appearance from time to time, starting from Windows 1 to Windows 11?

Window 1

This startup of Bill Gates and Paul Allen first released an OS for computers in November 1985, which was named Windows 1. In terms of appearance, Windows 1 is still very simple. It appears that the application window is arranged neatly which is divided equally into 3 columns.

Windows 1 is equipped with several features, ranging from clock icons, games, MS-DOS Executive which shows file storage, to word processing applications. Early Windows types that run on top of MS-DOS, allow users to use the mouse, display readings, and photos on the PC screen.

At that time, even though it existed, the use of the mouse feature was still not and many people were not used to it. So Microsoft provides a game called" Reversi"(similar to the photo above). This game can only be played with the mouse. another purpose so as not to pay attention to Windows 1 users who can get used to using the mouse.

Window 2

2 knowing the arrival of Windows 1, Microsoft launched Windows 2 in December 1987. In this second type, Microsoft introduced many new innovations. For example the expertise of an application window that can overlap with other applications. Not only that, the features of minimizing(minimizing) as well as maximizing(enlarging) the application window are introduced.

For the first time, Microsoft also introduced a "control panel", where users can access various system settings and configuring options for their PCs. The control panel feature still survives to this day. Not only that, Microsoft Word and Excel applications run early on Windows 2.

Windows 3

In 1990, Microsoft launched Windows 3. The interface of Windows 3 at that time had begun to be more patterned and modern. Some of the icons that were originally still dark and white in Windows 2 already have color. A kind of paintbrush application icon, recorder, and calendar. In this third type of OS, the card game Solitaire was first introduced.

Windows 3. 1

Instead of using the name Windows 4, Microsoft launched the successor to Windows 3, under the name Windows 3.1 in 1992. One of the most significant innovations in Windows 3.1 is the introduction of the TrueType font (TrueTypeFont/ ttf). Not only that, Microsoft also introduced the legendary game Minesweeper for the first time.

Windows 95

After 3.1, Microsoft subsequently released Windows 95. As reflected in its name, this operating system was released in August 1995. In Windows 95, Microsoft included various updates, starting with the presence of a start button with a typical Microsoft window logo at that time. Then for the first time the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and Internet Explorer appeared in Windows 95.

Windows 98

In June 1998, Microsoft released the successor of Windows 95, namely Windows 98. In this type, Microsoft included features of Outlook Express, Windows Address Book, Microsoft Chat and NetShow Player (the current Windows Media Player).

In Windows 98, Microsoft first introduced the "back" and "forward" navigation buttons in the address bar in Windows Explorer. Microsoft also released Windows 98 Second Edition in 1999.

Windows ME

After that in September 2000, Microsoft launched Windows ME. In terms of interface, Windows ME does not bring a significant change from the previous type. However, this surgical system targets consumers from the industrial market. Because this type of Windows has a feature that means a kind of more automatic system recovery.

Then Internet Explorer type 5. 5, Windows Media Player 7, and Windows Movie Maker also first appeared in Windows ME.

Windows 2000

Same with Windows ME, Microsoft also released Windows 2000 for consumers from industrial groups. Windows 2000 is the first type of Windows that supports the "hibernate" option, aka a combination of shut down and sleep modes when turning off the computer.

Windows XP

A year later or to be precise in October 2001, Microsoft launched Windows XP to the market. Microsoft brought changes to the aspect of its start button and taskbar. In Windows XP, the start button is now green. The Microsoft logo has also been overhauled to be more modern.

The taskbar, which used to be gray, has now been changed to blue. For the first time, Windows XP also supports built-in features for burning CDs. Windows XP was just retired in 2014.

Windows Vista

In 2007, Windows Vista was launched in the market. Through the type of Vista, Microsoft also updated the appearance of Windows, by carrying transparent elements. Windows Media Player 11 and Internet Explorer 7, and Windows Defender first appeared in Windows Vista. This operating system also includes voice recognition, Windows DVD Maker, and an image gallery. Windows Vista was also the first type of Windows that was distributed on DVD.

Windows 7

In October 2009, Windows 7 was released. In terms of appearance, Microsoft still maintains the transparent element in Windows 7. This is clearly visible from the start menu and taskbar. Compared to Windows Vista, Windows 7 is said to have faster, normal, and easier to use performance. In this type, Microsoft also introduced handwriting recognition.

Not only that, it also introduces a screen capture feature (screenshot) and a feature that allows changing window dimensions more quickly and automatically.

Windows 8

In October 2012, Windows 8 appeared. This operating system is said to bring about a very radical interface overhaul that Microsoft had tried on Windows. The reason, in Windows 8, Microsoft removed the start button and menu on the desktop. This matter is tried so that the operating system is more friendly with touch screen features.

As a result the start button on the desktop is replaced with "start screen". Microsoft has also overhauled the appearance of program icons in the start menu, so that they form widgets arranged in tiles.

Windows 8.1

After that Microsoft launched Windows 8.1 in October 2013. Different from Windows 8, Microsoft has again included a start button on the desktop. In Windows 8.1, users can choose to go directly to the Windows desktop, instead of entering the start screen like Windows 8.

Windows 10

Microsoft launched Windows 10 in 2015. Windows 10 is the successor to Windows 8.1 operating system that incorporates several new features, from personal assistant technology Cortana to security based on face and eye recognition.

This surgical system is also cross-platform. The same type can be used in various features, both computers, tablets, or smartphones. Likewise, various applications on Windows 10 are also cross-platform.

Windows 11

Well, what is very new is Windows 11. Microsoft is carrying out a major overhaul of this latest operating system. The overhaul started with a fresh and clean interface (UI) design, updated task window management features, increased performance, and Android application support.

In the interface, changes are very visible in the taskbar and start menu. The menus are no longer on the left, Microsoft has shifted them to the middle like in the MacOS interface. Microsoft has also slightly changed the appearance of the task window, which is now slightly rounded corners, instead of sharp like the old windows. The Windows 11 UI theme is more transparent and looks fresh.

Microsoft also introduced Snap Layout, Snap Group, and Desktop which is said to make it easier for users to control more windows and access them faster, while multitasking.
